Measuring blood pressure in Pets2017/09/24

At Homevet we are Measuring blood pressure on a daily or weekly basis at pets homes.

Hypertension (high blood pressure) can be due to some of the following reasons:
Causes of hypertension:
renal disease
hormonal fluctuation
hyperthyroidism
diabetes
heart disease
congenital/ genetic

The symptoms of high blood pressure can be:
Sudden blindness
bleeding inside the eyeball
Retina detachment
Blood in the urine
Nose bleeds
Disorientation
Seizures

How to measure BP?
We have a hand held machine whereby we measure dog and cats blood pressure. We use a Doppler Machine method to obtain blood pressure- a cuff is put on the dog or cats arm, manual cuff inflation, and reading the pressure gauge. It is important to keep the dog or cat still long enough to get an accurate reading. The machine is similar to what is used for people but its specially made for pets with different sizes of cuffs that will fit different sizes of animals paws!
It is difficult to assess how having high blood pressure actually makes a dog or cat feel. But we think it can’t feel good- we have detected many pets with hypertension and they all seem a lot safer and happier on medications. For any questions call homevet on 9860 5522
